GIANNI BERENGO GARDIN

Gianni Berengo Gardin is one of the best known and most important Italian photographers. Born in Santa Margherita Ligure in 1930, he has been involved in photography since 1954. Until 1965 he worked for Il Mondo. Over the years he has collaborated with major national and international newspapers (Domus, Epoca, L'Espresso, Time, Stern, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Du, Le Figaro). Berengo Gardin has exhibited his photos in hundreds of exhibitions around the world, which have celebrated his work and creativity, including the anthologies in Arles (1987); at the Leica Gallery in New York (1999); at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome (2001 and 2016); at the MEP in Paris (2005); he has also exhibited at Photokina (Cologne) and at the Venice Biennale. In 1994 a selection of his works was included in the exhibition 'The Italian Metamorphosis, 1943–1968' at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. 

His works are present in important collections, including the National Chalcography in Rome, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Maisonne Européenne de la Photographie, the FNAC Collection in Paris, the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, the Eastman House in Rochester (NY), the United Nations in New York. 

He has recived Countless awards and recognitions during his long career: in 1972, Modern Photography magazine included him among the 32 most important photographers in the world; in 1975 Bill Brandt chose him for the 'Twentieth Century Landscape Photographs' exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; Henri Cartier-Bresson included him among the eighty photographers of the exhibition 'Les Choix d'Henri Cartier-Bresson'. He has published over 200 photography books. Gianni Berengo Gardin lives and works in Milan.
